There are a set of developmental stages of drawing that occur in a stereotyped manner in all individuals and are related to the process of neurodevelopment.
Several prerequisites exist for them to develop:
- Gross motor development.
- Fine motor development, and within this, the digital grasp, and therefore graphomotor skills.

Stages of drawing development:
- Stage of scribbling, from 2 to 4 years.

- Stage preschematic, from 4 to 7 years

- Stage schematic, from 7 to 9 years

- Stage of realism, between 9 and 12 years

- Stage pseudorealistic, between 12 and 14 years
