Measurement Parameters and Clinical Utility

  • Maximum Cranial Length (L): Anthropometric distance from the glabella to the opisthocranium.
  • Maximum Cranial Width (A): Maximum transverse distance between both eurion points (above the ear pinnae).
  • Formula: Cephalic Index = (Width / Length) × 100

Interpretation of Results

  • Dolichocephaly / Scaphocephaly: Cephalic Index < 75%. Elongated and narrow skull (common in prematurity or sagittal craniosynostosis).
  • Mesacillin (Normal Range): Cephalic Index between 75% and 80%. Harmonious cranial proportions.
  • Brachycephaly: Cephalic Index > 80%. Occipital flattening with bitemporal widening (typical of positional deformities or coronal craniosynostosis).
