- Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a clinical syndrome of acute neurological dysfunction occurring in term or late preterm newborns secondary to a perinatal asphyxia event, and is one of the leading causes of mortality and long-term neurological sequelae (cerebral palsy, developmental delay, epilepsy, etc.).Diagnosis is based on a combination of clinical criteria (need for resuscitation, low Apgar, altered state of alertness), laboratory parameters (severe acidemia in umbilical cord or neonatal blood gas analysis), and monitoring (abnormal aEEG).
- Therapeutic hypothermia initiated within the first 6 hours of life is the only effective treatment to reduce death and disability in newborns with moderate or severe HIE.{332710:GSPGSS3E};{332710:HSPJSS3A}
