Depending on age, there are different peculiarities and limitations:

| <6 months | MRI may be inconclusive due to immaturity; repeat between 6–12 months. |
| 6–12 months | Better gray-white ratio; repeat if there are unclarified suspicions. |
| 12–24 months | Ideal for characterizing dysplasias or abnormal migration. |
| >2 years | Definitive MRI in many cases; repeat only if there are clinical changes. |
