Normal neurodevelopment.

The concept of neurodevelopmental disorders corresponds to the term «neurodevelopmental disorders» in Anglo-Saxon literature. We can interpret this concept in a more or less restrictive way.

  • As those disorders that are the result of altered neurodevelopment itself (a disordered neurodevelopment). It is the most used meaning, since many of the mechanisms and causes of neurodevelopment remain unknown. These would be “primary” neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • As those disorders that, by occurring before or during neurodevelopment, alter its course (a disorder during neurodevelopment). Within this concept we could include, for example, CP, which can be considered a neurodevelopmental disorder, and has specific consequences that do not occur in acquired brain injury in adults, such as a associated growth disorder, but it is a "secondary" disorder.

The classification of neurodevelopmental disorders in the DSM-5 follows this logic, focusing on the primary neurodevelopmental disorders, and has a specific category for other “specified” neurodevelopmental disorders (315.8/F88), such as fetal alcohol spectrum.

Childhood cerebral palsy and epilepsy are not included within the DSM-V classification as neurodevelopmental disorders, as they present symptoms within the field of neurology.
